Visit satellite monitoring station in Germany 24 to 25 September 2014


Within the context of the continuous cooperation and coordination with all administrations around the world on topics related to the telecommunication sector, TRA represented by Spectrum Management Unit visited Leeheim Satellite Monitoring Station in Germany during the period 24-25 September 2014 to avail of the German experience in managing Satellite Monitoring Stations and closely identify the main components and systems used in this station which is reckoned one of most important stations specialized in this field worldwide. This visit comes as part of SMU preparation to start the implementation of Satellite Monitoring Stations Project in the Sultanate and its keenness to examine the operational equipment and systems manufactured by the bidder selected by TRA to implement this project.

Draft Access and Interconnection Regulation under Phase 1 of the consultation

This is with reference to the on-going consultation on the draft Access and Interconnection Regulation.

TRA has received comments on the Consultation Paper and the draft Access and Interconnection Regulation from Omantel, Nawras, Samatel, Friendi and Zajel under Phase 1 of the consultation. Under Phase 2 of the consultation, TRA now invites these respondents to make comments on other respondents’ comments, which should reach TRA no later than 3.00 pm on 26 June 2014. The comments of respondents are available at TRA website (www.tra.gov.om).

TRA meets postal services providers

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) organised a meeting for postal service providers at City Seasons in Al Khuwair to discuss matters relating to the regulation of the postal services market in Oman in accordance with the international standards and rules. The meeting was also attended by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Directorate-General of Custom Services, which is part of Royal Oman Police.

Toll Free Numbers

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) would like to make it clear that toll-free numbers are the numbers that start with (800) followed by five numbers. Calls could be made to these numbers free of charge as the call cost is borne by the party receiving the call.

These numbers are assigned to government institutions, private establishments or any other entities engaged in the provision of particular services to individuals and corporations.

TRA’s Participation in Comex 2014

This year at Comex 2014 the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), along with Omantel and Nawras, has set up a Telecom Zone to highlight current initiatives undertaken in the telecom sector, among which is the TRA initiative to establish 200 telecom tower sites in 250 villages. In the Telecom Zone there will be four stations: the first station will highlight the afore-mentioned initiative; the second station will represent a geographic indication of the quality of telecom services; the third station will assist visitors to the Telecom Zone on developing awareness on how to select the most suitable telecom package to their needs and the fourth station will be a joint initiative with Cisco highlighting a system that creates greater accessibility for persons with disabilities, specifically the hearing and speech-impaired, to communicate their needs to an intermediary using sign-language who will then translate their request vocally.

TRA seizes more than 200 fake telecom devices in Musandam

   

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) caught more than 8 shops in Musandam Governorate selling non-type approved tablets and mobile phones (fake devices). This was part of a periodic inspection campaign conducted by TRA on mobile phone outlets all over the governorates and willayats of the Sultanate to ensure compliance with the obligations set out in TRA Decision No. 8/2008 on the registration of these shops as dealers in telecom equipment and their compliance with type approval.
