Submarine Cables Regulation

The Sultanate of Oman is connected via several submarine cables. These submarine cables link Oman to global communication networks (phone services and the Internet). Oman is also connected using satellite and terrestrial cables (land cable). However, submarine cables carry most of the data and voice traffic where over 95% of telecommunications traffic is actually routed via submarine fibre-optic cables.

In light of the above, the TRA is initiating a public consultation through which it seeks the public’s opinion on the draft regulation on submarine cables, pursuant to article (5) Repeated of the Telecommunications Regulatory Act issued by Royal Decree No. 30/2002 and its amendments.

TRA shall give due consideration to all comments and contributions received from the interested parties; however, incorporation of any proposed changes will be at the sole discretion of the Authority.

The TRA, at its own discretion, may publish comments and views of the respondents unless confidentiality is requested and justified by them.
